What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics but this learning area is much more than simply banding together subject titles; it equips our students to live and work successfully in the 21st Century through a future-focused learning approach.
STEM learning is built around The Four Cs - real world skills that students will apply throughout their lives and careers.
- Collaboration – Working together to achieve a goal.
- Communication – Sharing thoughts, questions, ideas and solutions.
- Critical thinking – Looking at problems in a new way and connecting learning across subjects.
- Creativity – Trying new approaches to get things done.
STEM encourages students to be confident in their ability to design and engineer creative solutions and take risks in a safe and supportive learning environment.
Cooma North’s STEM hub is a flexible learning space where students can meet to create, generate ideas and access the STEM materials and technologies that support their learning goals and promote their capabilities in digital technology. These technologies include a range of robotics kits, laptops, film production equipment, virtual reality headsets and a 3D printer.
Engaging with peers and using purposeful thinking skills gives students the tools and confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges and generate new ideas in all areas of learning and in life beyond school.
